Challenge: To communicate what the Port Chicago Mutiny was about. Briefly, during World War II an explosion occurred at Port Chicago, a Navy ammunitions depot, killing over two hundred mostly African American sailors. After a group of sailors refused to return to duty until safety was improved, they were charged with mutiny and court martialed. Solution: The first two covers evoke the fire that erupted after the explosion. The blue background of the first cover refers to the color of the Navy. The bars on the second cover suggests the prison where the sailors were held. The last cover is more conciliatory with its image of the Port Chicago memorial. Image on last cover by Johann Graphics.
